Taking Care Of Your Roses
To keep your roses lasting longer they need a few simple steps from you.
Firstly where you display them in your home needs to be a cool area, away from direct sunlight and not near the hot areas or drafts. Temperatures above 70F should be avoided.
When you first get your roses home, before putting them into a vase, the stems need to be cut. Flower stema out of water will start to dry, this is a protection mechanism by the flower to lock in the moisture in the stem. However, if this is kept dry then no further water can penetrate the stem to get to the flower bloom. By recutting the stem, this allows the water to flow to the bloom.
The water in your vase needs to be clean and at room temperature and if available, flower food can be added. You can buy flower food from your florist or you can make your own. There is a recipe below, it’s very simple. If you don’t have flower food, the main thing is to make sure the water is changed daily and the flower stems are cut.
Make sure there are no rotting leaves in the water, this is major factor in the flower life being short.
If you find your roses are drooping their heads, then this is a sign that the water is not getting up to the bloom. You can get the flower to lift it’s head again by recutting the stem under water and leaving the rose in the water until the head lifts. Usually this happens within an hour. Do not lift the stem out of the water after cutting until the bloom has lifted it’s head. You need to cut enough to remove the dry end, this could be between 2cm and 4cm.
Taking the time to look after your cut flowers will enable them to last longer and more enjoyment for you.
